The Marchesi Family

When Carlo and Rosa Marchesi arrived in New York City from their tiny village in Northern Italy, they realized that they’d have to make do. Not ones to be deterred by more concrete than they’d ever seen in their lives, they gamely planted grapevines in their back yard, fruit trees in the front, and crammed their tiny cellar with neat rows of barrels, bottles, and preserves.

Fifty years later, their grandson Rudy broke ground on his first commercial vineyard, some 100 miles from the Bronx but not all that far from Carlo and Rosa’s vision of the good life. Rudy raised his two daughters and his little winery through the 1980’s and 90’s, with everyone working together to bring in the harvest, pile up hoses, and tote boxes of wine for nice tourists from New York (after homework was done, of course).

Today, Rudy and his youngest daughter Kristin are the core managing team at Montinore Estate. Together, they are committed to making sustainably farmed, carefully crafted,  wines for sale in Oregon and across the country.

Sustainable Harvests

At Montinore, we appreciate that the health and vitality of our wines, our workers, and our community are connected to the vitality of our vineyards. Not only that, but we believe in our hearts that sustainable, site-specific agriculture yields the finest wines with the most distinctive character possible.
sustainable harvests Our farming practices reflect these ethics. We cultivate our vineyards according to the strict standards of biodynamic farming. This means that instead of applying chemical pesticides and herbicides, you might find us spraying chamomile or diluted milk on our grapes, Yep, sounds crazy, but it consistently produces some of the best fruit we’ve tasted. And to make sure our vines have the richest, healthiest soil possible, we interplant them with nitrogen rich cover crops and return our skins, seeds, and clippings to the soil each spring as compost.
